Gifts with a Cause

December 15, 2014

In a previous blog post, we told you about great charity you can donate to this holiday season, today we’re going to tell you about a great source for unique gifts. It’s always great to get a gift you want but it’s even better to get a gift you didn’t know you wanted. And it’s even better when you get a gift with a great cause and backstory.

The online store Rise Up Shop sells handmade products that are created in impoverished areas throughout the world and the proceeds go towards helping improve the lives of that area. Here’s a quick look at the Causes and their goods:

-Karen Hill Tribe of Northern Thailand: Handmade infinity scarves, clutch, purse and pillowcases. Buying products made by Hill Tribe women artisans help prevent their daughters from being trafficked into sex slavery.

-Kazakh Collection: Handmade rope necklaces and bracelets. The money from these products supports the Kazakh cultural preservation and craft in Western Mongolia.

-Mayan Community Development: Handmade necklaces and earrings. Each piece of jewelry sold helps support initiatives to improve health, education and nutrition of the Mayan people.

-The Brave Collection: Gold, Brass or Silver and Cord Bracelets. The Brave Collection was born out of a desire to create a catalyst for people to communicate about the reality of modern day slavery, and wash away the taboo associations with such a sensitive subject matter.

-Survivors of Sex Trafficking: Scarf and silk necklace. These products are hand made in Cambodia as part of a rehabilitation program that helps girls move from victim to survivor.

-Peace Bomb Bracelet: Bracelets made from bombs dropped in Laos. Buy back the bomb. Article 22 creates sustainable jewelry from re-purposed war metals.

-Colors of Hope: Small glass charm filled with colored powder from Nepal. Buying this charm helps build a school and bring hope to the children of Reang Keseil.

I encourage everyone to go http://riseupshop.com and check out these very cool goods and help change some lives. Happy Holidays!
